River Stories

River stories

Where to start? The watery highway of the Wye, linking the riverside villages to the wider world, has produced more than its fair share of stories. How about a hair-brained bet to paddle a precariously unstable coracle out to Lundy island and back? Or a notorious 16th century pirate born in Tintern – and acts of piracy on the Wye? Or days out to Bristol Zoo by boat. Or tragedy striking when an absolutely massive ship built in Monmouth was launched in 1835? Or tales from the watermen’s favourite riverside watering holes, full of characters of ill repute, waiting for the tide? Here are just a few or our river stories to whet your appetite. You can find out more about the heritage of the Wye Valley AONB here.
