Tintern Abbey in the mist: Photo Linda WrightHeritage

The Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is renowned as one of the most dramatic and scenic lowland landscapes in Britain, with magnificent viewpoints round almost every bend in the river.

At its historical heart is majestic Tintern Abbey, established in the twelfth century and possibly the best known, best loved monument in the area.

On closer inspection, though, the valley's heritage is even more impressive - it's a rich historic tapestry, created by thousands of years of settlement and industry, from Prehistoric times to the present day.
