The modifications are based on The Environmental Report (November 2009) which come from the completion of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Habitats Regulation Assessment (HRA).

Post Consultation Draft 2009 - 14

The recent public consultation produced 546 comments from 29 individuals and organisations and from four workshops attended by 68 people throughout the AONB in an event held at Ross-on-Wye. Management Plan 2004-2009

Management of the AONB is co-ordinated through the AONB Management Plan. Voluntary plans were published in 1980 and 1992. The statutory Management Plan for the years 2004-2009 was developed as a requirement of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. This has been adopted by the four Local Authorities, the Countryside Agency, the Countryside Council for Wales and English Nature.

The plan has been nationally recognised as an example of best practice for aspects including the comprehensive public consultation process, the inclusion of a State of the AONB report, a listing of the special qualities of the area, and robust policies and targets.

Contents of the plan

The Management Plan sets out the vision for the area and the priorities for its management for the period to 2009.

The plan seeks to:

Conserve and enhance the unique landscape and natural beauty of the AONB
Guide change that is sensitive to the area's special qualities and resources
Manage the area in a sustainable way
Enable present and future generations to appreciate, conserve, understand and enjoy the AONB, whilst integrating the needs of local communities and visitors.

Development planning
Sustainable and integrated transport
Community development
The rural economy
Sustainable tourism
Recreation and access
The effective management and governance of the AONB

Vision

The vision statement taken from the plan is:

To conserve and enhance
the unique landscape and natural beauty of the Wye Valley AONB
and within this overriding principle;

guiding change that is sensitive
to the area's special qualities and the outstanding resources
of woodland, farmland, river and cultural heritage,

managing it in a sustainable way
as an area where vibrant communities live and work

and enabling present and future generations
to appreciate and conserve, understand and enjoy
the area's picturesque and sublime qualities,

integrating the needs of
the local communities and visitors
with this internationally important protected area

Action Plan

The action plan involves a range of partner organisations in initiatives and projects to address the priorities it has identified.

A rolling three-year work programme has been drawn up so actions can be planned in advance, and so that suitable partners can be involved and resources identified. Funding will be sought from a wide range of sources.
