Local Produce
Herefordshire Beef, Gloucestershire cheeses and Wye Valley lamb and honey are just some of the products associated with the AONB countryside. The AONB promotes the principle of "Buying local" to help the area's farmers, growers and producers keep the AONB a living and working landscape.
Local food initiatives set up by the AONB include an on-going project to provide more fresh, seasonal produce on the menus at local schools, and work with local tourism businesses to increase their use of local produce. Future plans include helping farmers create "supply hubs" or co-ops so that they can supply consistently and in larger quantities to schools and restaurants. A local Savour the Wye food award was held in January 2006 and 2007. Winners of the 2007 Awards, sponsored by Waitrose, received their awards at the Royal Forest of Dean College in Octobe.r
Local Food Fact Sheet
The Local Food Fact Sheet is part of the AONB's on-going "Savour the Wye" initiative to encourage the use of local produce in food outlets, and develop a food culture in the Wye Valley. Use the Fact Sheet to find out dates and venues of all local farmers' markets in the area, where you can pick up local food directories and interesting tips from those sourcing or selling local food.
Savour the Wye Directory
The Savour the Wye Directory includes on-line details of local food producers and suppliers either within the AONB itself, or operating on the boundaries. Note: The Wye Valley AONB has included the details in this directory in good faith and for general information purposes only. No guarantee is given as regards accuracy, completeness or the quality of the produce listed. Neither Wye Valley AONB nor any of its employees or partners shall be liable for any inconvenience caused by errors or omissions.
Map and Guide
A brand new full-colour map and guide to 35 producers in, or close to, the AONB has now been published (August 2007). For further details email information@wyevalleyaonb.org.uk
