Angidy hydro-electric scheme

- Local residents
The AONB unit is spearheading renewable energy initiatives in the Wye Valley and is the driving force behind proposals for a community hydro-electricity scheme along the Angidy River, near Tintern.
Following a feasibility study by consultants Hydrogeneration Ltd from Devon into the potential for hydro turbines along a stretch of the Angidy River, residents have come together to form the Tintern Angidy Project (TAP) a company limited by guarantee.

TAP is now in the process of looking into the possibility of using three small hydro-turbines in a single housing, using a head of water formed over a one kilometre stretch of the Angidy brook, to generate an average annual energy yield of 195 Mega-Watt hours - sufficient to power between 30 and 50 homes and save some 90 tonnes of CO2 emmissions. The scheme has the full backing of Tintern Community Council and the next phase will be to seek planning permission and investigate additional funding.
