AR66 Abbey outlineHistoric Sites

The three key historic attractions in the AONB are Chepstow Castle, Tintern Abbey and Goodrich Castle, although the area also has a less-discovered but nonetheless intriguing industrial heritage and archaeological heritage.

Chepstow Castle

Chepstow's imposing Norman castle, high up on its cliff above the River Wye, guards a major river crossing between England and Wales. www.cadw.wales.gov.uk

Tintern Abbey

Now a spectacular ruin, Tintern Abbey was founded by Cistercian monks in 1131, and largely rebuilt in the late 13th century. It is the best-preserved medieval abbey in Wales, and an outstanding example of Gothic architecture. www.cadw.wales.gov.uk

Goodrich Castle

Goodrich castle is one of the most complete medieval castles in Britain, built to guard a ford across the River Wye. www.english-heritage.org.uk
